Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup slivered almonds (optional)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Step 2: Cream Butter and Sugar

  • In a large mixing bowl, add 1 cup of softened unsalted butter and 1 cup of powdered sugar. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Step 3: Add Extracts

  • Pour in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 1 teaspoon of almond extract into the butter-sugar mixture. Mix well until the extracts are fully incorporated.

Step 4: Combine Dry Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 ½ cups of all-purpose flour and ½ teaspoon of salt. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms; you may need to use your hands to gather the dough together.

Step 5: Shape the Cookies

Take small portions of the dough (about 1 inch in diameter) and shape them into balls or crescents. If desired, press slivered almonds into the tops of some cookies for added texture and decoration.

Step 6: Prepare the Egg Wash

  • In a small bowl, beat 1 egg. This will be used as an egg wash to give the cookies a beautiful golden finish.

Step 7: Brush with Egg Wash

  • Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the tops of the cookies with the egg wash.

Step 8: Bake the Cookies

  • Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Keep an eye on them, as baking times may vary.

Step 9: Cool the Cookies

  • Once baked, remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
